2018 was our second year of the Ride Across America– 5 weeks on the trail starting near North Bend, just east of Seattle, and traversing across Washington state on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail (235 miles across the state), then using dirt trails and roads to cross the Idaho panhandle and finally into St. Regis, Montana in September. I rode with 60 or 70 other riders on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail in Washington, including Brenda Birrell and Olympia Granger, for about 10 days. I also hiked part of the trail with Curt Ringstad and Rusty DeSherlia. The rest of the time I rode alone. I had two excellent trail support buddies– Tom Bernards and Curt Ringstad. Tom and Curt drove the SAG wagon (a 2008 Dodge 1 ton pickup truck and 3-horse trailer), picked out camp sites, cooked and provided great support and great company for the trip. Good friends are essential on a trip like this!
As the photos show, Idaho is a beautiful place, especially near the Idaho-Montana border. We followed the St. Joe and Little St. Joe rivers for days, and The Bitterroot Mountains are an incredible place to ride through and camp in and enjoy.
